You know, this comment just made me think, that small isn't necessarily a BAD thing! The game may need to be retooled a bit in order to work better with a smaller playerbase, but not every game has to be large to be interesting. I think that as long as the game is welcoming to the occasional newcomer it's perfectly fine to be a small little niche game, too.
